Echocardiography, or Heart Ultrasound, is a chest examination that allows for the assessment of the size of the heart’s chambers and cavities, the function of the heart valves, the performance of the left ventricle, the contractile ability of the myocardium, the presence of infarction sites, and ischemic damage in various areas of the myocardium. It can also detect blood clots in the heart chambers and blood vessels, as well as pressure-related changes in the heart. This examination helps diagnose (congenital) heart disorders, the presence, extent, and location of post-infarction scars, as well as the presence of pericardial fluid and its related complications.

Echocardiography also aids in more accurately monitoring valve prostheses, heart clots, and similar conditions.

The decision to perform such an examination is made by a cardiologist during their consultation. A family doctor can also refer you for the ultrasound based on which we conduct the procedure.

With a referral from a family doctor, the visit, including the echocardiography, costs you €10. The family doctor who referred you covers the cost through the Health Insurance Fund.

The results of the examination are evaluated by the attending physician. If you don’t have a referral, we recommend scheduling a consultation with a doctor to interpret the results.

How is the examination conducted?

  • You can eat and drink as usual before the examination and take your daily medications.
  • The procedure is painless.
  • During the echocardiography, you can lie on your back or left side.
  • The ultrasound device’s sensor is placed on the chest.

If possible, bring the results of previous heart ultrasounds and surgery descriptions with you.
